Beyond Balance: Work-Life Integration is the New Reality for Modern Entrepreneurs

There are various types and sizes of businesses, but my favourite is the kind that prioritises fun, flexibility, and freedom.
As a business growth consultant, what a business does is less important to me than ensuring that founders, entrepreneurs, and growth developers have a plan that aligns their personal and professional ambitions.
Life is just too short to put one set of priorities before another!
For years, founders and entrepreneurs have listened to the world discuss work-life balance. For most of them, it just doesn’t apply.
How ‘balance’ implies conflict
Founders and entrepreneurs love their work, so they’re often unconcerned with the number of hours they spend on their passion projects. Concerning oneself with ‘balance’ at this point will only create unnecessary guilt and stress.
Digital transformation has made separating work and life impossible, and the psychological toll of maintaining artificial boundaries is tiring. That’s why I’m advocating for a change from work-life balance to work-life integration, which involves being mindful and staying present, which leads to more authentic living.
Until now, I’ve never experienced what it’s like to create a business from the ground up. But in 2007, when I joined Electronics Marketing Limited (EML) — now Wildfire — it felt very much like a startup business. Albeit with a much more structured 9-5 arrangement.
Growing a business in the 2000s
The team at EML comprised a handful of ex-engineers who had identified a gap in the electronics market for good quality PR. They were so busy dedicating their time to servicing clients, they had no time for developing net new business. And that’s where I came in. More on that later!
At that time, EML fit the description of a lifestyle business, 10 people with a little under £1m turnover.
The service proposition was niche, differentiated, and we were the only UK PR agency with the international reach that UK-based electronics brands needed to make it on the world stage.
It was the golden age of electronics PR.
We used technology mindfully, maintained clear boundaries between work and home, and — though this may sound like a drag — it actually made things simpler.
Growing a business in 2025
Fast-forward nearly two decades, and so much has changed—sales, marketing, and business development (three distinct functions — I’ll explain why soon), international business, and, of course, technology!
Wildfire is now a Certified B Corp, a Great Place to Work, with £3m turnover and consistently achieving 20% plus profit.
Since I began my work journey over 25 years ago, how businesses are managed and grown has changed dramatically.
Energy management has replaced time management in the fight for greater integration to live more authentically.
Boundaries are blurred as we scurry to do the school run during flexible working hours and ponder about work while we play. Some of my best ideas have popped into my head while bodyboarding at Croyde Bay 🌊
Permitting yourself to pursue integration in this way creates increased presence in all activities, which leads to greater creativity and a more sustainable long-term success.
It claws back some of the simplicity of the past while maximising the opportunities that exist now.
Finding your True North
While you may want to create some ‘sacred spaces’ for certain activities where you need to be singularly focused for a while (one of mine is reading time with my youngest, for example), integrating your personal and professional ambitions and goals is the way forward, literally.
Your vision for successfully achieving this is your true north.
It’s the founding principle of my new venture, True North Growth Partners (TNGP).
And while having the destination firmly in your mind is crucial, we all know that life is all about the journey, not just the destination.
TNGP exists to help you navigate that journey, uncovering the pathways that are right for your business, making every day enjoyable and every tomorrow something to truly look forward to.
Together, we’ll find the right blend of tools (I have thoughts on how to tangibly achieve better integration), platforms, and approaches to build your business and your mental resilience, all while having fun.
TNGP is very much a lifestyle business, and I’m here for all the fun, flexibility, and freedom, as I support my kids (currently 15 and 11) through college and high school.
I’m looking forward to sharing my story with you as we grow together and introducing you to my network of independent partners, all specialists in their fields and bloody brilliant people.
If you’d like to have a chat about anything new business, sales, or marketing related, just drop me an email at paula@truenorth-gp.co.uk.
Otherwise, TTFN!
